This is the third Mummypowder album, released on 23rd
April, 2004. It was recorded in Karillo Studio, Porvoo,
in June 2003, and features Heikki Tikka on drums, Aleksi
Mänttäri on bass, Johan Turbanov on lead guitar,
and Janne Lehtinen on vocals and guitar. It was produced
by Nick Triani, who also produced the first Mummypowder
album, 'The Heavyweight Champions', in 1998 after moving
to Finland.
All the songs on this album were actually written before
- some long before - the second album, 'V.
Strange', was released in May 2003, but due to the nature
of the tracks - this is a full-blown band album recorded
in a commercial studio with a producer, string players
and other bells and whistles - they weren't recorded
until June 2003.
The album was mastered at Cutting Room in December 2003
by Björn Engelmann, who's also responsible for
many chart-topping successes, including Rammstein, Cardigans,
Kent and A-Camp.
This album emphasizes the fact that each Mummypowder
album is an individual listening experience. Besides
everything else, it is a real tour-de-force for Janne
Lehtinen as a songwriter. Its unashamedly plain, powerful
sounds serve to take nothing away from the delightfully
melodic compositions, yet make a statement of their
own against some of today's easily-dated, cold, over-produced,
complicated-sounding records.
The band, Heikki Tikka, Aleksi Mänttäri and
Johan Turbanov, make Mummypowder sound tighter than
ever on this album, luckily without sounding muso at
all. Ninni Poijärvi plays violin, Lotta Poijärvi
plays viola, Riikka Lampinen plays cello, and Hannu
Salminen plays trombone. The album also features Riitta
Supperi singing backing vocals on 'Wanna Fight?' and
Rocky the dog doing his on 'Things Turned on Reverse',
on which you might also hear the producer Nick speaking,
as well as Heikki playing two simultaneous drumtracks.
(Look out for that live - it's truly amazing!) Oh yes,
and continuing the tradition of including songs originally
written for weddings look out for 'Right This Minute'.
Some people proclaimed that 'Consternation! Uproar!'
would be their album of the year 2004 - and that was
right after they first heard the mastered version in
December 2003...
